We would all like to believe that people do not judge a book by it’s cover. But you and I both know that everyone makes assessments or judgements of people based on how people look. And that is perfectly ok, actually it is in our nature to visually assess others to see if they are trustworthy or safe. On our way to success and significance in the Super Six areas of life investing time and intention into our looks can propel us forward faster in many of those areas of life.
There is a great quote that I believe sums up how impactful looks or appearance can be for us as men:
“If you look good, you feel good, If you feel good, you play good, If you play good, they pay good.” -Deion Sanders
Whether we are trying to get a promotion, or we are starting a new job or a new business, or if we are taking our wife out for our weekly date night, or even if we want to increase our confidence as we journey to a healthier body; looks and appearance matter. I believe they matter because they first deal with how we feel about ourselves. The problem can sometimes be that we may not be feeling all that great at the moment. And from this feeling we impact our appearance. I will suggest a contrary process, as Deion Sanders says, in order to feel good many times it helps if you start by making yourself look good.
3 Steps To Super Stylish
- Focus on Feelings – Focus on how you want to feel, then think about what you can do for your appearance that will help you feel that way. For example, if you want to feel confident for a job interview and you feel most confident in a certain color, grab a blazer or tie in that color and put it on.
- Find Your Standout Style – We want to have a positive presence when we walk into the room, and the best way to do that is to stand out above the crowd. Now, this does not mean to just go crazy. What I mean here is, find what your standout item or look is and rock it. Maybe it’s a bowtie, or colorful socks, or even a baseball cap and a blazer. Whatever it is, make sure it is unique to you and you feel good wearing it.
- Flaunt the FIT – Too many men buy clothes one to two sizes too big. The best advice I can give you in whatever situation you are in, is to find the right fit. Take time to get professionally measured and buy clothes that fit your body. This will instantly increase your confidence no matter what your weight is.

Remember, looks matter, but remember to ensure the only person they should matter for first is, YOU. Our appearance should complement who we are and what our mission is. Think about each role you play and think about how you can show up confident in that role if you were to invest some time and intentionality into feeling great about yourself.
